Cadayunan Back To School Outreach

The CDOBloggers ones again is going back to Cadayunan Elementary School in Besigan Sitio 14, the last baranggay of Cagayan de Oro City. If you’ve been following my posts about this little school, you must’ve seen the outcome of our first visit to the school. For me that was the best way to end my 2011. I loved how enthusiastic the kids were despite the gloomy weather when we reached their little school. We saw the simplicity and the innocence. Life in Besigan is so laid back that the kids probably has no idea what a computer is. I just hope though that by now they already have an electricity. Click here to see photos and videos of our last outreach in Besigan.

Anyway, it’s almost back to school so the group decided to fulfill our promise to go back. We are glad to know that it’s possible to go back to the place again after couple of landslides brought about by typhoon Sendong. We are planning to provide them with their basic back to school needs (School bags, simple uniforms and school supplies). We are again appealing to your kind hearts to help us make this project possible. Be our partners in bringing hope to those kids.

There are 2 ways to help:

  1. Learning Bags. You may donate a BAG (learning bag) which contains a pad of paper – Grade 1 or 2, two notebooks, two pencils, eraser, ruler, sharpener, and crayons. You may also add some more.
  2. Donate cash. Aside from the learning bags, we will also be conducting a feeding activity (just like what we did before). You may send us some cash donations and we would be responsible in buying the stuff for the learning bags and for the feeding activity. Super Herbs

All moms out there like me who are sort of clueless on how these herbs we usually see in cooking shows really taste. Those of you who are skeptical in putting them into our dishes simply because we don’t want to take the risk as we are clueless how they work! This post is for us.

Get to know these fast and fresh flavor boosters.

Oregano – A classic way to punch up to tomato sauce, lamb, or beans; dried oregano is a good substitute.
Basil - Tear up leaves and sprinkle on top of pizza or chicken, or puree with Parmesan, olive oil and pine nuts for a homemade pesto.
Mint - Adds cool, refreshing flavor to drinks (like a mint julep!) and marinades, a perfect pairing with buttered peas.
Parsley – Chop up this breath freshener and toss with cooked potatoes or pasta (curly parsley is milder than the flat-leaf kind).
Cilantro – A staple in Asian, Mexican, and Indian dishes, especially salsa, guacamole, and chutney; the dried seeds are the spice coriander.
Dill - These feathery leaves are best used raw (stir ‘em into tuna salad or dip) or added to hot food just before serving.
Sage – Stuff a few leaves under the breast skin of a whole chicken before roasting. You can also fry the leaves in very hot oil for a crispy, elegant garnish.
Thyme – You can easily strip the leaves from a sprig of thyme by pulling it through fork tines, or try tossing whole sprigs into boiling water to flavor rice.
Chives – Add a subtle onion flavor to egg dishes, baked potatoes, or fish; for best results, snip with scissors.
Rosemary - Use sturdy stems as skewers for grilling; add chopped leaves or sprigs to stews and roasts (especially chicken and lamb).

30 Day Blog Challenge – Summer Outing 2012

I have always wanted an out of Mindanao Summer getaway with my family but due to some circumstances we cannot avoid, this plan will be in the luggage for a while. That won’t be for long though, I am optimistic that soon enough we will be able to explore and enjoy other places together. Well anyway, putting aside the much dreamt getaway does not mean our Summer activity will be at Zero! Thanks to my dear Bang for treating the entire family (Mine and Hers) to a summer outing!

We went to CDO’s neighboring town known as the City of Waterfalls, Iligan City. We went there last year so this time we decided to heed to another pool (actually just beside last year’s summer venue) in Timoga. The place was not so jam-packed yet when we reach there since we arrived a bit earlier. We met with the Bunayog Clan and shared the day with them. We chose to go to Mimars because we loved the cold spring when we went there the first time a week before. I’m glad they did not alter those running waters from the mountains to the area because that’s both refreshing to the eyes and the body. That’s the only part of the entire swimming area I enjoyed the most.

The kids of course busied themselves at the kids area where the 2 slides were located. I just wished though that they put a water level mark on each pool to avoid any accident. My friend’s little one almost drowned because he ran to the kids pool not really suitable for his age (the place has 3 kiddie pools). He slip through the first stair and went straight to the water higher than his height. Good thing my husband was there to jump into the pool and him (with 2 phones in his pocket and a pocket book and his wallet) :P . Anyway, what’s important was the little boy’s safety. Mind you, that didn’t stop him from still going to the water and enjoy :) . Hahahaha! I’m glad it didn’t scare him a bit.

By 11AM, the place started to be crowded. Well, it’s summer anyway so that is expected! Plus it was a Sunday adding the blackout factor in Iligan. The place was so jam-packed that all the tables and cottages were taken. Despite that, the families didn’t stop coming in. It’s amazing how everyone were accommodated and had a space in each pool in the area! We left around 4 and dropped by Ma. Christina Falls so our parents and the kids will see how majestic the place is. That was a whole day of fun with the family and Bang’s family too who will be soon part of the family too ;) . I hope this won’t be our last summer getaway though. So how about you, where did you go or planning to go for the summer?

Kids Learn from Their Parents’ Relationship

As parents we always see to it that we instill good values to our kids. We normally tell them what’s good and what’s not. But are we aware that as couple, we infuse learning to them by just watching us how we live our lives inside the four corners of our homes? We are giving them HOW-TO information by watching us interact as their parents. We might not be aware of it but how we interact with each other as couple is either making or breaking them as they are being molded to be the person they will become in the future.

Below are some lessons (we might not be aware of) we are imparting to our kids.

A Healthy Marriage
Before we became parents, before the kids were around, our partners were our baby. But when we had the kids, most partners stopped taking care of each other. That is unconsciously putting the marriage into the bottom of the priority (one of the biggest reasons of marital unhappiness. As couple/parents when we make the effort to make the relationship happy, we are letting the kids know that marriage is good and that it makes people happy. The kids would say their mom makes their dad happy and vice versa.

Commitment
There’s no doubt that marriage is not the easiest thing in the world. Do not let your kids learn it all from the star-studded media around them. According to the author of Money, Sex and Kids: Stop Fighting About the Three Things That Can Ruin Your Marriage “When your children watch you’re frustrated, cranky, having financial troubles, one of you is sick or unemployed – they learn that marriage isn’t about expecting perfection but about getting through these things together.”
